Different physical locations between db and app servers bad idea?

0
0

Say I had 3 app servers (with load balancing in place) in Las Vegas and two MySQL servers in Atlanta; how much does distance affect performance on this sort of situation? Let's assume the db servers are just running master-master so the second one is just there for HA purposes.

My gut feeling tells me this setup vs. a typical LEMP box running WordPress setup will be slower because of the latency but I don't really have a way to test this situation.

Thanks for any advice you guys can give!

ServerStatus

ServerStatus first originated from BlueVM's original Server Monitoring script and then me taking it a little bit further. I've both live memory and disk space levels, a styled web interface a long with a mobile interface. The project is completely open source and available on github! I also had implemented it into LookingGlass in the dev branch, unfortunately it was added 4 months ago so I have no idea if it still works or not...

I've been neglecting it for the past few months but I've been receiving suggestions for new features as well as new interface. I've been hammering away at my computer and would like to say that version 3 is slowly underway and will feature hopefully many new features everyone may like.

I've seen a mix of both end users wanting to just keep an eye on their servers as well as server hosts using publicly or privately, so some of the features may appeal to others while to some not.

ServerStatus 3
New redesigned look
Server status history
Server Announcements
Up & Down Alerts + Emails too!
Server overview pages
Admin control panel

These features are not final and should they not work out may be cancelled.

Screenshots maybe?

I'm curious to know how many of you use ServerStatus and how (personal, or server host public/private viewing).

FrapHost donating to typhoon Haiyan victims (We also urge you to do the same)

Hello,

Typhoon Haiyan was reportedly the strongest typhoon/hurricane ever that made landfall in recorded history. We are thankful and at the same time worried - thankful that we are from the metro manila and didnt get affected much by typhoon Haiyan's wrath, worried that there were reportedly 10,000 people missing/dead, and hundreds of thousands to millions who are left homeless.

Facts about super typhoon Haiyan - Source

• Super Typhoon Haiyan had winds of 195 mph and gusts of 235 mph. This is one of the highest wind speeds ever recorded in a storm in world history.
• It made landfall as the most powerful typhoon or hurricane in recorded history, based on wind speed measurements from satellites.
• The strength of Haiyan is equal to that of an extremely powerful Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic. • No hurricane in the Atlantic has ever been this strong; Hurricane Camille hit the U.S. Gulf Coast with an estimated wind speed of 190 mph.
• The storm is over 300 miles wide: The width is about equal to the distance between Boston and Philadelphia.
• About 10 million people live on the central Philippine islands and are most at risk of a direct strike from Haiyan.
• A storm surge as high as 15 feet is possible in some parts of the Philippines. • Haiyan is the Chinese word for petrel, a type of bird that lives over the open sea and returns to land only for breeding.
• The storm is known as Super Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines. The World Meteorological Organization officially assigns typhoon names, to have a consistent name for a storm, but other countries are free to create their own names too.

Haiyan's storm eye was hit directly towards the visayas part of the country, here is a video footage in tacloban city, see how Haiyan literally blown away trees and houses:

This is how it looked like afterwards:

If Hurricane Katrina that devastated the USA, New Orleans in particular, had winds of 175mph, Haiyan had gusts of 235-289mph. So we that's how stronger Haiyan is. To add up, Philippines is also not that stable based on the economy and is infact a third-world country. So if the victims of Katrina recovered within months, we're estimating years of recovery from Haiyan. And how we say every help counts.

As a Philippine-based webhost, we feel it is our duty to help our fellow countrymen who were victims of the super typhoon "Haiyan". As such, we have decided to donate 15%-30% of the total sales generated in the whole month of November to the victims of the typhoon. The less sales we get, the more % we give, this is to end up us still giving more money regardless of the sales we get. Donations will be sent to the Philippine Red Cross as money/cash/check.

I also urge webhosts to do the same, to anyone who's interested, kindly inbox me and I'll provide you a link to the government's relief operations paypal account for you to send the donations ito.

Recommend an Ultrabook

0

No matter how hard I try I can't actually get anything done on a tablet, so it's time I replace my ultrabook. For the past few years I've been using a Toshiba first generation Ultrabook with an v1 i3 CPU. The things I like about it are:

  1. Backlit keyboard
  2. Very Light and small package
  3. Real mouse buttons below the touchpad

What I must have in the next one are:

  1. Higher resolution screen vs my current 1368x720
  2. Backlit keyboard
  3. Light, durable
  4. Good battery life
  5. i5 or better

Any recommendations / personal experience?

NoSQL Solution Suggestions!

0
0

Hi Gents and Gals,

I am currently looking for suggestions on a NoSQL solution for a very large, high number of rows database. My estimates are around 5 billion rows over the next up coming year. I have looked at couchdb, RethinkDB, and Mongodb, and I like all of them, but they each have there own small problems. Is there some others I should look into, or if you have a better implementation of one of the above I would gladly like to know.

Rough Table Format:

| id(system Specific) | IP address | Value | unix timestamp | unix timestamp 2 | application |

Thanks,

Mun
